The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH) seeks a board certified physician trained in either Hematopathology, Transfusion Medicine or Hematology-Oncology with a strong background and academic interest in hemostasis and thrombosis to serve as Director of the Clinical Hemostasis Laboratory at NCH. The successful candidate will lead the advancement of the laboratory services to support the needs of Comprehensive Centers for Hemophilia & Bleeding Disorders, Hemostasis & Thrombosis, Anticoagulation, and the Adolescent and Young Adult Sickle Cell Clinic at NCH. The successful candidate will be responsible for research and development of new clinical tests, refinement of existing clinical tests, quality assurance, and regulatory oversight of clinical testing. Our goal is to further foster the partnership between DPLM and the Division of Hematology, Oncology, Blood & Marrow Transplant for shared resources that will enhance the integrated clinical and research programs for classical hematology at NCH.

The position will provide assistance to the Department’s active learning curriculum for residents, graduate students, pathology and clinical fellows. Fellowship programs offered within the DPLM are the GME sponsored Pediatric Clinical Pathology Program, the only such program in North America, and the ACGME accredited fellowship program in pediatric pathology. The Department is also in the process of launching an International Scholarship for Pathologists and Laboratorians to spend 3 months at NCH. Fellowships in the Division of Hematology, Oncology, Blood & Marrow Transplant include an ACGME accredited Pediatric Hematology-Oncology program and a GME sponsored, advanced fellowship in Pediatric Hemostasis-Thrombosis. Of note, the Hemophilia Treatment Center at NCH is a recognized International Hemophilia Training Center.

The Abigail Wexner Research Institute at NCH is in the top 10 NIH funded pediatric research institutes in the United States. It is the site of the Center for Clinical & Translational Research in which hematology faculty are engaged in the study of the translational epidemiology of pediatric thrombosis, focusing on the clarification of biomarkers and clinical features linked to thrombosis, especially in pediatric kidney disease. Faculty in the Center for Child Health Equity and Outcomes Research are actively engaged in improved von Willebrand disease diagnostic testing and medication adherence for children with chronic classical hematology conditions. There is active participation in clinical trials for new treatments in hemostasis and thrombosis, including new medications and gene therapy for hemophilia, von Willebrand disease and blood clots. The recently established Blood Disease Research Affinity Group is designed to enhance classical hematology research across at NCH. The Research Institute is also the home to one of the world’s largest pediatric biobanks.

The Department of Pathology accessions over 300 bone marrow specimens, over 250 flow cytometry samples, over 1700 hemoglobin electrophoreses, as well as  approximately 500 peripheral bloods smears, platelet aggregations and coagulation screenings annually. The clinical laboratories have a volume of >3 million tests per year and the Institute for Genomic Medicine (IGM) clinical laboratory processes 7,000 specimens a year. The test menu of IGM continues to expand to support the DPLM as well as outside facilities across North America.
